Reactivated 30 Apr 1962. Assigned to United States Air Forces in Europe, 366th Tactical Fighter Wing, on 8 May 1962. LOCATIONS: Chaumont AB, France, 8 May 1962. Flew F-84s in training operations and participated in numerous USAFE exercises, including deployments to Wheelus AB, Libya. During the Cuban Missile Crisis in Oct and Nov 1962, the 480th assumed a limited alert commitment. Regular training missions ended on 15 Jun 1963 as the unit prepared to move back to the U.S. The 480th flew F-84s from Phalsbourg Ab, France, to Holloman AFB, NM, in Jul 1963. At Holloman, the 480th participated in an intensive stream of exercises, tests, maneuvers, and demonstrations, including combat survival training. In Nov 1963, 480th pilots started transition training in F-4 aircraft, although the squadron did not receive its own F-4s until Feb 1965. On 7 May 1965 the 366th Wing transferred its last F-84F to the Air National Guard, and began to prepare for operations in Southeast Asia. COMMANDERS: Unknown, 8 May - 9 Jul 1962. |
